“The BBQ Shack”
My happy place…
Yeah yeah, I know… it still doesn’t have a proper name. It’s been over two and a half years, and I’ve yet to land on the right one. So, for now, “The BBQ Shack” will do.
Like any BBQ fanatic, I eventually ran out of space. Between all the gear, the endless cooks, and a growing collection of smokers, grills, and accessories, it became clear I needed a dedicated spot to make it all work. For years, I tossed around ideas, scribbled down plans, and procrastinated (as you do). Then one day, I thought, “Stuff it,” and finally pulled the trigger on building supplies.
It took two solid weekends of sweat, swearing, shooting a rented nail gun, and a few beers along the way, but I got it done. It’s not fancy, but it’s mine, and it’s built for BBQ. The Shack is where it all happens: from trimming the meat, applying rubs, to firing up the grills. It’s also where I test out gear, try new recipes, and occasionally burn something (hey, shit happens).
The BBQ Shack is more than just a workspace, it’s my little slice of heaven. It’s where good food and great memories come to life. One day, it’ll have a proper name. For now, it’s just “The BBQ Shack.”
Planning The BBQ Shack
Before building The BBQ Shack, I knew I needed to get the planning spot-on. The space was limited, so I wanted to make every square inch count. That’s where SketchUp came in handy. I used the program to design the entire area, mapping out exactly how it would look and function.
First, I measured the available space and got to work sketching. I factored in everything I wanted in the Shack… BBQs, a fridge, shelving, and a sturdy bench for prep work. I didn’t just eyeball it, either; I plugged in the exact dimensions of every piece of gear to make sure it would all fit perfectly without feeling cramped.
The design process wasn’t just about cramming everything in, it took into account the flow too. I made sure there was enough room to move around during a busy cook, with everything I needed within arm’s reach. The fridge had to be easily accessible (priorities, right?), and there needed to be plenty of bench space for prepping, plating, and resting meat.
By the time I finished the plans, I had a clear vision of what I wanted: a functional, efficient, and damn good-looking BBQ setup. All that was left was to make it happen.
The shack has had a few upgrades over time, and is still evolving. It’s a very useful space now, and gets an absolute hammering. But I think it needs a proper name now…
